What I think makes Carpenter’s “The Thing” so rad is that you don’t know. We can have fun with guesses though.
It’s true, some peeps think MacReadyslips (alien) Childs some fuel.
I’ve also heard others say they think it’s MacReady who’s the alien and that a little saliva swap with Childs ensures multiplicity so it can eventually spread itself somewhere warm like a deep dark polar bear crevice.
Others claim that you can’t see Childs breath so he must be The Thing. But that’s pretty bunk on close inspection, & I feel pretty safe in calling full out bullshit as The Thing is basically built to mimic lifeforms perfectly.
Whenever Carpenter has been asked about the ending he provides a different answer every time - maybe he’s emphasizing how open to interpretation it is or maybe he doesn’t even know.
2004, Carpenter had plans to do a sequel with MacReady and Childs as survivors, but it fell through due to production budget.
It’s likely for the best that never happened -I cringe just thinking about it. Instead, we can continue the story in our own imagination.
I had The Thing for PS2- and it starts where Carpenter’s ends. You have to investigate the remains of the U.S. beta camp. SPOILER: MacReady is revealed as a survivor at the end of the game. So if one really needs an answer you could take this one and thus your theory could be right.
Thanks for axing I’m always down for some Thing talk. Straight up- It’s just dope ass shit!
